"The Prose della volgar lingua (Prose on Vernacular Eloquence) is generally considered, alongside the De vulgari elonquentia by Dante Alighiere, to be one of the two most influential works on literary criticism and rhetorical theory in the history of Italian literature. Bembo's promotion of the "vulgar tongue," and his arguments for a vernacular humanist or classicizing literary solution to the linguistic question met the resistance of purist partisans of the Latin, of proponents of the lingua cortigiana and of defenders of the contemporary Florentine language" (Encyclopedia of Italian Literary Studies)
